Syrian Rue, harmala, harmaline, P. harmala, Peganum harmala, MAOI
SYRIAN RUE (Peganum harmala) grows from the Mediterranean to northern India, Mongolia, and Manchuria. Everywhere it has many uses in folk medicine. It's seeds have been employed as a spice, and its fruits are the source of a red dye and an oil. The caltrop family, Zygophyllaceae, to which Syrian rue belongs, comprises about two dozen genera native to dry parts of the tropics and subtropics of both hemispheres. I have used the dye from this seed to change the color of leather to red for use in falconry lures. Almost coloring the leather the exact color of blood on wounded prey.
